Our Story

The Higashikurume International Friendship Club (HIF) was established in 2012 with a vision to create a welcoming and inclusive community where people from different cultural backgrounds can come together, learn from each other, and build lasting friendships. What started as a small group of volunteers has grown into a vibrant organization that serves as a bridge between cultures in our local community.
Located in Higashikurume, Tokyo, our club has become a cornerstone of multicultural understanding in the region. We believe that cultural diversity is not just something to be tolerated, but celebrated and embraced as a source of strength and enrichment for our entire community.

What We Do

Our organization operates through various interconnected programs and initiatives designed to address the diverse needs of our international community:

Educational Programs

Our Japanese language classes remain our flagship program, serving over 200 students annually. We offer multiple levels from absolute beginners to advanced conversational skills, with specialized classes for business Japanese and daily life situations. All classes are taught by certified instructors and supported by volunteer conversation partners.

Cultural Exchange Activities

We organize regular cultural exchange events including international food festivals, traditional craft workshops, music and dance performances, and storytelling sessions. These events provide opportunities for both learning and teaching, allowing community members to share their rich cultural heritage while discovering new traditions.

Community Support Services

Recognizing the challenges faced by newcomers, we provide practical support services including assistance with paperwork, healthcare navigation, housing guidance, and employment resources. Our volunteer network includes professionals from various fields who offer specialized expertise.

Networking and Social Connection

Regular social gatherings, hobby groups, and family-friendly activities help create lasting friendships and support networks. From monthly coffee meetings to seasonal celebrations, we ensure that no one feels isolated in their journey of cultural adaptation.

Our Impact

Over the past twelve years, HIF has made significant contributions to the multicultural landscape of Higashikurume and the greater Tokyo area. Our programs have directly benefited hundreds of international residents, helping them not only adapt to life in Japan but also thrive as valuable community members.
Many of our former language students have gone on to successful careers in Japan, started families, and become community leaders themselves. Our cultural events have fostered understanding between Japanese and international residents, breaking down barriers and building bridges of friendship that extend far beyond our organization.
We've also contributed to policy discussions at the city level, providing insights from our experience to help create more inclusive and supportive environments for international residents throughout the region.
